How can a birth partner help during labor?
Last updated:
A birth partner helps most by being calm, present and practical: taking over the contraction timing, offering sips of water and light snacks, giving firm pressure on the lower back, keeping the room calm, speaking up for her choices, and knowing the signs that mean call the provider straight away.
Keep time
Take over the timing so she can focus on each contraction. In Popzy, tap when one starts and again when it ends. There is no need to announce every number. Share the pattern when it is useful, or when it matches the plan from her provider.
Food, water and comfort
- Offer sips of water after each contraction.
- Offer light snacks in early labor.
- Gently remind her to empty her bladder every hour or two.
- Offer a cool cloth for her face or a warm pack for her back, whichever she prefers.
Touch and counter-pressure
Many people find firm pressure on the lower back comforting during contractions. Try the heel of your hand low on her back, or press both hands gently inward on her hips at the same time. Ask what feels good, follow her lead, and stop if anything hurts. If she does not want to be touched, that is normal. Stay close anyway.
Calm words and a calm room
- Keep it short and steady, like "Long breath out" or "You are doing it."
- Breathe slowly with her, so she can follow your rhythm.
- Dim the lights, keep voices low, and play her music if she wants it.
Speak up for her, and know when to call
Know her birth preferences and bring a copy. Help her ask questions, like "What are the options?" and "Do we have time to think about it?" Save the numbers for her provider and maternity unit, and write them down too. If you notice any urgent sign, call straight away. You do not need to wait to be asked.
Look after yourself as well: eat, drink and rest when you can, and take turns if someone else is there to help.

Can the partner use Popzy on their own phone?
Yes. Popzy works on iPhone and Android. Each phone keeps its own history, so whoever is timing should use the same phone throughout, and can share the log with the care team.
What should a birth partner pack?
A change of clothes, their own snacks and drinks, any medications they take, and a card or change for parking. The hospital bag checklist has the full list.

Popzy is not a medical device. It times contractions and does not replace advice from your midwife, doctor or maternity unit. If you are unsure, or if your waters break, you notice bleeding, your baby moves less or anything feels wrong, call them.
